Blame it on Covid or simply blame it on current circumstances, but homeowners are spending a lot of money on home improvements and renovations to turn their homes into a safe and comfortable haven. Whether it is a high-end Wi-Fi security system, a smart TV set-up in a home theatre, or modifying the floor plan of a home to be more open plan, welcoming and more suited to family living, the fact is that home improvements do add value to any home, but more than that, they can transform an average home into a place you love to spend time in.

One home improvement that many South African homeowners often take on is the installation of a swimming pool, especially for those with young children or a growing family. Let's be honest, we have beautiful weather for most of the year and spend a lot of time outdoors so being able to take a cool splash in a refreshing pool or have a place where the kids can play is an added benefit to any home. However, if this is your forever home, you might want to do some forward thinking about what happens when the kids leave the next or when you decide it is time to get in shape or stay healthy. Then the choice between a lap pool or a conventional swimming pool is one that you should give some thought to.

Installing any type of shade cover over a conventional curved pool will be more expensive than over a lap pool when you take into consideration the size (width) of the pool.

Lap Pool or Conventional Pool?

• Fun and Games

A lap pool or conventional pool is fun for a family and kids can enjoy both in the same way. After all, kids just want a place to splash and have fun with their friends. A lap pool is also great for setting up for pool games, as the length and width make it easy to rig up a net over the pool for ball games. A conventional swimming pool, particularly one of a curved design, does not offer as much flexibility.

A lap pool can be customised in both length and width to fit perfectly into a specific area, as can be seen below.

• Use of space

From a space point of view, a lap pool takes up less space than a - curved - conventional pool. A lap pool can be situated down the side of a property or up against a boundary at the far end of a garden or close to a patio. The long, narrow shape of a lap pool can be customised to specifications to fit into almost any space. You can have a lap pool that allows a single swimmer, one that accommodates 2 swimmers, or more.

Lap pools are the perfect solution for those gardens that are long and narrow and can be landscaped in the same way as you would a conventional pool.

• Shade pool

An added benefit of installing a lap pool is that you can have a custom structure erected over the pool to provide shade or protection. Due to the shape of a lap pool, it is easy to have a steel carport-like structure assembled to cover most or a section of the pool. You can have the structure motorised for easy opening and closing depending on the weather.

• Health benefits

From a health and fitness point of view, both a conventional and lap pool fits in with a healthy lifestyle. A lap pool, however, is designed as the name indicates, making it easier to perform long laps without taking a break and enhancing your swimming or training schedule or even water aerobics. Health and fitness, once the kids leave the nest, will no doubt become a priority and having the foresight to invest in a lap pool means that you will have both already sorted.
