Update a patio with pallet furniture

Use cheap (or free) reclaimed wood pallets to make a comfortable daybed for your patio or garden.

If you have a few reclaimed wood pallets lying around - four pallets required to make the daybed - or are able to source some locally, here is a great idea for using pallets to make a couple of comfortable outdoor benches that can so easily be moved to make a comfy daybed.

This easy reclaimed pallet daybed is made by assembling two single benches, each made by taking two wood pallets, and joining them together. The single daybeds are then joined together with a latch to make a single daybed that is topped off with a comfortable foam pad to make a relaxing place to while away a lazy afternoon.

Select pallets that have good bones and give you plenty of reclaimed wood to work with. Remove the planks from one side from each pallet and use these to fill in an gaps at the top where the seating will be. Use only exterior-grade wood glue to join the two sections together and clamp securely before leaving overnight.

Spend some time sanding down the benches with 120- and then 180- or 240-grit sanding pads to remove splinters and provide a reasonably smooth finish, before applying a quality wood primer and paint for exterior wood. Paint the benches in a colour that complements your outdoor area - at your local Prominent Paints you can have an unlimited amount of colours mixed.

If you have some pallets left over, add style and storage to an outdoor patio or deck with an easy shelf unit.
