TOOLS:

Drill / Driver and assorted bits
Countersink bit
Jigsaw and clean-cut blade
Orbital or random orbit sander and 120- + 240-grit sanding pads
Tape measure and pencil

*Note: Amend this to 384 x 968mm if you are not adding the 3mm frames.

HERE'S HOW:

Note: Unless otherwise specified, all pieces require 3mm countersunk pilot holes to be drilled at 50mm in from the edges.

Assemble the frame

1. Attach the top to the sides and then measure up 100mm and 116mm on both sides. Mark the front and back of the sides as a guide for mounting the base. Drive  4 x 45mm screws into pre-drilled and countersunk holes.

2. On the front apron draw out your design and cut out with a jigsaw. Place the front apron underneath the base, drilling through the top of the base to attach.

3. On both sides - front and back - measure and mark 212mm and 228mm down from the top. Use this as a guide for attaching the top shelf, securing through the sides.

4. . On the top measure in 492mm for both ends and draw lines. On the top shelf measure in 476mm from both ends and draw lines. Use as a guide for mounting the centre shelf divider. Secure with screws through the top and top shelf.

5. Attach the middle shelf by measuring and marking 212mm and 228mm down from the top shelf. Draw a line on the front and back of the sides and use as a guide for attaching the shelf. Note that the shelf is flush with the back.

Assemble the drawers

6. Attach the back and front to the sizes before inserting and securing the base through the sides. See points 7 & 8 below for important information for mounting the drawer fronts so that the drawer fronts overlap the middle shelf and line up with the front edge of the frame.

7. Note that the drawer front of the top drawer is flush at the top to allow an overhang at the bottom of the drawer.

8. The drawer front for the bottom drawer is flush at the bottom to allow an overhang at the top of the drawers.

9. If you are adding a 3mm frame to the drawer fronts, cut the pieces to size and attach using Pattex No More Nails adhesive.

Finishing

  • Make sure to fill all holes with wood filler. Let dry before sanding.
  • Use 120-grit sanding pads to sand any uneven edges and wood filler. Sand  smooth with 240-grit, paying particular attention to the cut edges.
  • Apply 2 to 3 coats of Plascon water-based Velvaglo using a combination of paintbrush and foam roller.
