Easy ways to decorate a wall

The secret to a well-designed room is in the details. Wallpaper, paint techniques, wood panelling, and even tile can add a layer of interest and finish the polished look.

Wide stripes

Wide stripes are a popular trick for adding character to a plain wall. This one takes a subtle approach, with stripes of a single colour in matt and gloss finishes.

En vogue

Panelling is back in vogue. It lends warmth and texture to a room -- particularly when the surface is as intriguing as the faux panelled sitting room.

Neutral look

For subtle interest in this neutral bedroom, squares of two shades - lighter and darker than the wall colour - were applied to the wall in a checkerboard pattern.

Outdoor tile

A tile backsplash makes as much sense in an outdoor kitchen as indoors. This one uses large ceramic tiles in earthy colours.

Art for art

Here's an interesting way to decorate walls with just a few markers. Going beyond paint and wallpaper, blank walls have been covered with architectural features, art, books and pictures. You can use this technique to draw on any walls to create a unique effect. For those that are not too creative with a paintbrush, there are plenty of other options.

Blank canvas

For those not too creative with a paintbrush, there are many ways to decorate a wall. Recycle old picture frames to frame your favourite pieces and put them on display - on the wall!

Patchwork designs

While the simplicity of this project is very simple, the finished look is dramatic. My take: Use 6mm supawood cut to various sizes and cover with fabric. Glue the blocks onto the wall with No More Nails (glue or double-sided tape) to create your own patchwork design.

Double vision

A mirrored wall not only looks good, it's also practical in a small, dark bedroom. The mirrored wall above is created by framing glass panels of varying sizes.

Floral bedroom

Hand painted designs are perhaps the easiest and most affordable way to decorate a wall. In the bedroom above, shades of blue have been used to create a floral effect on the wall that matches the design of the bed cover. If there is a particular wall decor style that you have been wanting to try out - go ahead. There are no rules to what goes onto walls, as long as it looks good!
