Timisha at Toolbox Divas created the perfect lighting solution for her home office using remote controlled LED lights fitted inside a pendant light. This installation requires no electrician and no wiring and will light up a home when the power goes out.

Loadshedding has us all by the throat and it isn't going to release its grip any time soon, in fact, we are in for the long haul for the foreseeable future. There is nothing we can do except make life as comfortable as possible during loadshedding. Buying a generator or inverter or ups will help to reduce the load, but at the end of the day, there are plenty of easy DIY solutions coming to light that you can put to good use in the home for use when the lights go out.

This DIY battery-operated LED light fitting is a great idea, and you can purchase remote controlled LED lights at Builders and other stores.

At a cost of around R260 at Builders, the HomeQuip set of 3 LED battery-operated lights come with a remote control for easy switching on and off. No wiring required and easy installation anywhere in a home.

Timisha's DIY battery-operated LED pendant light is a really easy project to do and only requires a few basic tools to make the pendant light. The battery-operated LED lights with remote control are available at Builders, or search online for other sources, and are affordable. They are also a great way to have lighting in a home when loadshedding occurs.

While Timisha used this installation for a pendant light, you can use this same method for almost any type of indoor light fixture, and it allows you to add lighting elements to a home without the need for an electrician or the installation of wiring. It is also an ideal feature to light up a home when the power goes out and the remote control function means that it is very easy to operate.

Install Battery Operated LED Lights to any Light Fitting

This project is soooo easy, you can install the battery-operated LED lights into almost any light fitting, which means whatever lighting you need it can be chosen to match your decorating style. So long as there is space to mount the LED lights, you are good to go!

The Light Fitting

When shopping for a light fitting, make sure there will be plenty of space to mount the LED lights. While a single LED will provide a reasonable amount of light, it is far better to install 3 lights for a more practical lighting solution. Purchase the LED battery-operated lights first so that you can determine how much space will be required to mount them in the light fitting.

The LED Lights

Purchase a pack of 3 or more LED lights that have a remote control. If you purchase battery-operated lights that do not have remote function, it will be difficult to switch these on and off and you will need to mount the light fitting in an accessible location.

The LED lights can be secured to the light fitting using heavy-duty double-sided adhesive tape - also available at any Builders store. I prefer the Alcolin product as it secures firmly and lasts a long time. If you want to mount the LED lights into a drum shade, you will need to make up a frame to hold the lights securely inside the drum, as Timisha did in the first project above.

Mounting the Light

Now all that is left to do is to mount the light where you want it. If it is to be mounted as a pendant light on the ceiling and there is no electrical point or existing fitting, purchase a length of electrical cord to make a look like a genuine fitted pendant light. It is easy enough to fasten to ceiling boards - via a ceiling beam in the roof space - and you don't need to worry about any wiring since the LED lights are remote controlled. Should you want the light mounted on to a wall, install the fitting as you would any wall mounted light, just without any electrical cables. The same applies if you want a table lamp, floor lamp or standing lamp.

Ta-Da!
