Easy decorative shelves

If you are looking for a way to add interest to a boring wall, these easy decorative shelves provide an inexpensive and quick way to hang a few accessories to create an interesting feature. The shelves are made of polystyrene moulding or cornice that you will find in the timber section at your local Builders Warehouse.

You will need strips of polystyrene moulding with a nice profile, as well as some lengths of PAR pine 10mm thick and 44mm wide. Paint the sections with white acrylic PVA before you start. Cut both the moulding and pine strips to the length that you want for your shelves.

Using No More Nails adhesive, glue the PAR pine strips onto the top - widest edge - of the polystyrene moulding. Just a thin bead of adhesive along the top edge of the moulding is enough. Leave the adhesive to dry for an hour or so.

Now you can attach the back of the shelves to the wall with a thick bead of No More Nails adhesive. The shelves themselves are very light and the adhesive will hold them against the wall until it sets. The shelves are reasonably strong but won't hold heavy items but you can place a few lightweight decor accessories on display.
