Organize your craft or hobby space

I love getting stuck into crafty DIY projects, but I'm not a very organized person by nature. I take things out but never put them away, which means my craft space is always a big mess. I've decided it's time to take action and have been looking around for crafty storage ideas that can be incorporated into my office / craft space.

This is definitely so not my craft space, but oh how I wish that it was. A simple trestle table if the perfect solution for a small desk in your craft or hobby room, and you can easily take apart and pack away when not in use.

You need to think crafty when decorating a craft or hobby room. Crafts and hobbies use a variety of items and you want easy access to as many items as possible without messing up you work area. A couple of cup hooks and a dowel and you can easily make a holder for ribbons, tapes or papers on a roll.

If you use lots and lots of wrapping paper for your crafts or hobbies, you might consider making your own wrapping station. This wall-mounted wrapping station keeps all of your ribbons, paper and accessories neatly organized. Build two identical pieces, one for paper and one for ribbons. Once installed, you can quickly access supplies whenever a birthday or holiday event occurs.

Keep a crafty DIY space organized and clean using pegboard. Spray the boards with Rust-Oleum titanium silver for an industrial look before mounting onto the wall.

Pegboard is ideal for using in a craft or hobby room and there are so many ways you can use it to hang essential craft or hobby items. Make lightweight boxes with 10mm thick PAR pine, or repurpose old picture frames and 6mm pine dowels to make crafty displays.
The options for using pegboard are unlimited and you can buy small cut sheets at your local Builders Warehouse.

Love it...! Repurpose plastic paint containers into a storage wall for your craft or hobby room, or even for a kids bedroom. Cut paint pots down to size with a jigsaw or Dremel SawMax , or you can even use your Dremel Multitool and a cutting disk. Sandwich the pots between two sheets or 3mm white masonite, making sure the rim of the paint pot sits flush with the surface of the front sheet and then frame with PAR pine. Because you're using masonite, the construction is lightweight and can easily be hung onto the wall.

Repurposed cardboard boxes are ideal for storage in a craft or hobby room. This storage box is covered with scraps of scrapbooking paper and then coated with ModPodge or acrylic sealer to add strength. The corners and lock are gold craft paper made to look like the real thing!

I also like the idea of repurposing plastic containers for storing craft paint, simply by adding cardboard dividers. Keeping the paint stored upside down means that all it needs is a quick shake to be ready for use. If you use plenty of craft paints, make yourself a simple display stand using PAR pine and drill out holes using an appropriately sized spade bit, so that the paints can be stored upside down.

Plastic containers and storage drawers are just the thing for all your loose scrapbooking papers that are normally lying around all over the place. Look for storage drawers that stack on top of each other, so that you can add as many drawers as you need.

Who would have thought that a tool caddy could look so good and be so useful at the same time. Follow the instructions here to make your tool caddy and then cover with fabric or patterened paper or fabric.

PVC pipe is another crafty way to make storage for often used items. Cut PVC pipes to the length you require and glue these together with Tangit PVC glue. The glue dries almost instantly and you can stack up the pipes in any size of display.

Remember our previous feature on using shoe holders for storage in and around the home? You can also use this in a craft or hobby room for storing items for easy access. Plus, they also make a colourful display when filled with wool, embroidery thread, paints or colourful pens.

QUICK TIP

I prefer to leave wool and yarn in their packets to avoid them getting dusty. If you don't use your wool often, it's also a good idea to storage them in a cupboard to prevent lightening of the yarn.

Another great way to organize your wool is to repurpose glass jars into containers. Use a 6mm HSS bit to drill a hole in the top of your jar to allow the yarn to pass through easily.

If you need storage but can't drill into the walls, perhaps in a rented home, you can easily make these pyramid shelves for all your crafty accessories.

Make your own wine crates for handy storage around the home. Add some vintage brass or pewter handles, or repurpose handles you already have with Rust-Oleum Universal or 2X spray paint. If you're feeling really crafty, add some casters to the bottom and make your crates portable for moving around the house.

Cardboard paper printer boxes are repurposed into practical storage in this cubby shelf unit. Cover boxes with self-adhesive vinyl, scrapbook or wrapping paper, or with colourful fabric and then glue on handles.

In this well organised craft centre, open drawers allow for storage of bulky items. A chrome pole mounted in the cabinet sides is ideal for hanging ribbons and tapes for easy access.

Organizing your craft or hobby room - or space - makes a lot of sense. Avoid the frustration of not being able to find things easily. I find that if I struggle to find what I need my desire to get crafting diminishes and I end up trying to sort out the untidy mess rather than having fun crafting...!
