Who doesn't love acrylic craft paint for creating unique works of art, embellishing decor accessories and just having fun with it? Now you can also take acrylic craft paint to the next level with the addition of fabric paint medium. This project can be added to any acrylic paint to transform it into fabric paint. That means that you have a wider selection of colours, including metallic colours, to create custom fabrics that you can use in your home. Fabric medium does not alter the colour of the acrylic craft paint and dries completely clear, but it does aid in bonding the paint to your choice of fabric for a lasting design.

I have always loved fabric paint but have been disappointed in the lack of colours it is available in. I also like the idea of being able to use any acrylic paint to paint onto fabrics and that I can also use metallic paint. To ensure long-lasting painted designs, I also iron the back of the painted fabric with a medium iron, and this also helps with the paint binding process.

While there are plenty of colour options in fabric paint, simply by using a fabric paint medium in combination with acrylic craft paint, you have plenty more colour choices.

What if I am not artistic?

These days, you don't need to be artistic to paint on fabrics. There are so many ideas on the Web that you won't be stuck for inspiration, and you can easily print these out on stencil plastic sheets. You will find stencil sheets at various online sources, and I know that Takealot.com offer plastic (Mylar) stencil sheets up to A3 size, which is fairly large. You can also use any type of reasonably thick plastic sheeting and a craft or utility knife to make your own stencils if you want to do repeatable projects. And don't forget that you can buy readymade stencils online from various sources and having these shipped internationally shouldn't cost that much as they are lightweight.

Limitless colour options

By using conventional acrylic craft paints and a fabric medium, you have far more colour options to choose from. Invest in a set of quality acrylic paint colours that can be mixed to create custom colours to use for your projects. That way, you can design painted and stencilled fabrics that are personal and uniquely yours.

How to use fabric paint

Fabric paint is just the same as craft paint, but it provides a more permanent finish on fabrics. You can use it to decorate cushions and pillows, tablecloths and serviettes, kitchen towels, fabric art, shoes, and other items of clothing, and so much more. Follow the steps below for a successful project:

  1. Wash the item beforehand and dry thoroughly. Do not use fabric softener.
  2. Mix the acrylic paint with fabric medium so that everything is ready to start.
  3. Have a backing on which to place to fabric to prevent spoiling any work surface.
  4. Use assorted-size paintbrushes.
  5. Do not flood the surface with paint. A few lighter coats are better and will give the paint a chance to seep into the fabric fibres.
  6. Let the paint dry overnight and then used a medium iron to go over the back of the fabric to set the paint. Don't wash the item for a few days and when you do, start with a cold wash for the first few times.
