Spring has sprung and the kids are spending all their time outdoors while the weather gets warmer. Now is the perfect time to put together a collection of wood offcuts and leftover paints and make these crafty games for the kids to play outdoors. If you don't have any wood scraps, you will find what you need at any Builders store.

TO MAKE THE WOODEN DICE

Blocks of wood cut to cubes in whatever size wood you have or make a small dice around 44 x 44mm square or a larger one that is 67 x 67mm square. Builders stock both sizes of squared PAR pine and you only need a 1.8 metre length to make several blocks.

HERE'S HOW:

  1. Cut the blocks square using a jigsaw, mitre saw, or table saw and then use 120-grit sandpaper to smooth.
  2. Use painter's tape to mask off triangular shapes on all the blocks that you can then paint in one or two acrylic craft paint colours.
  3. Use a piece of plastic or card to use for making templates for the dots on the dice. Cutting templates will make it much easier for painting all the cube sides.
  4. Apply 2 to 3 coats of ModPodge or clear acrylic sealer to provide protection if you plan to keep the dice outdoors.

TO MAKE THE NOUGHTS AND CROSSES

Noughts and crosses are a fun game for kids, and it helps to build up motor skills. All you need for this fun game is a scrap piece of wood, some pebbles and paint. The size of the board will be determined by the size of the pebbles but work around a 200 or 250mm square size.

HERE'S HOW:

  1. Cut or have the wooden board cut to size and then sand smooth with 120-grit sandpaper.
  2. Use painter's tape to mask off the lines for the noughts and crosses sections.
  3. Craft paint in assorted colours is great for painting the lines on the board and the pebbles.
  4. Apply 2 to 3 coats of ModPodge or clear acrylic sealer to protect the board if being kept outdoors.

TO MAKE THE GIANT JENGA GAME

Kids of all ages love to play Jenga and making this giant version of Jenga can be enjoyed outdoors and will keep kids occupied for hours. This game increases fine motor skills and gets the kids thinking with their minds and not their thumbs! Let the kids take their turns to gently remove blocks from the Jenga tower and place them on the top of the tower without letting it topple. You need a total of 54 blocks for the Jenga tower.

HERE'S HOW:

  1. Use 22 x 44mm PAR pine planks and cut the blocks to 150mm or 200mm in length. You can also have the boards cut to size for you at any Builders store.
  2. Sand all the blocks nice and smooth on the surface and around the edges with 120-grit sandpaper.
  3. Paint or leave raw as is and then seal with 2 to 3 coats of ModPodge or clear acrylic sealer for protection.
