DIY festive home

Use whatever you have, repurpose or re-use household items, or grab your craft or DIY tools and make your own holiday decor.

Use mason jars or recycle glass food jars to make a joyous display for your home. Display on a fireplace mantel, entry table or wall shelf. You can fill the jars with baubles, tinsel or greenery to match your holiday decor. Arrange the jars in a pyramid and wrap with a shiny garland.

We recently featured some amazing ideas for advent calendars,, but here's another one that you can make on the cheap. Count down the festive season with small brown envelopes filled with tiny treats. You can use rubber stamps or stickers to add the dates and motifs and then embellish with string, ribbons, tags and washi tape.

Glue together cardboard tubes from wrapping paper, kitchen towels and toilet rolls to make a wonderful festive wreath for your front door. Use a sharp knife to cut the tubes down to size and apply glue to secure the shape. Add string to hang and then fill with ornaments.

Make a pretty card tree with some pine dowels and ribbon. Cut the dowels into 5 sections, the longest being about 20cm long and enlarging this by 5cm for each additional dowel. Fold the ribbon in half and hot glue the dowels in place. Use binder clips to attach your favourite greeting cards.

Put scrap wood to good use and make a wonderfully unique centrepiece for your dining table or holiday decor. Glue or nail the box together and fill with scented greenery cut fresh from the garden, or add faux festive foliage to highlight your table setting.

Another festive idea for the dining table is to use a craft punch with a star shape to cut foil and coloured paper stars to sprinkle onto the dining table. Scatter them around your crockery for festive charm.

Buy, or make your own, wire climbing frame as an inexpensive and DIY alternative to a traditional Christmas tree. Mount the frame inside a galvanised tub or bucket filled with greenery, and adorn the wire tree with colourful baubles.

A trio of Rosemary plants are trimmed to resemble mini-Christmas trees for the holiday table. Paint the pots to match your decor theme and add a decorative ribbon for a touch of charm. What's nice about this idea is that the plants can be potted outside in your herb garden once the holidays are done and dusted.
