It isn't always easy to find the perfect fabric for all your projects, and this is when you will want to create your own fabrics using fabric paint or acrylic craft paint.

If you struggle to find the perfect cushions for your home, perhaps you need specific colours, or even designs, Mandy Pellegrin of Fabric Paper Glue, shows how easy it is to make your own hand painted cushions.

YOU WILL NEED:

Lightweight cotton or linen fabric to make the cushion cover

Cushion inner

Fabric or acrylic craft paints in your choice of colours

Paintbrushes in assorted sizes

Scraps of foam to make your own stamps

HERE'S HOW:

Use a variety of paintbrushes to create different brush strokes over the entire fabric. Load the paintbrush with quite a bit of paint and continue painting until the brush is empty. This project isn't about creating perfect shapes, but rather a messy technique that looks brilliant once finished.

For added contrast on the fabric you can also use a small paintbrush to paint on small dots to contrast against the brushed paint areas. Simply dip your paintbrush into the paint regularly for perfect dots.

For a different hand painted cushion design, make up your own stamps using scrap pieces of foam glued onto a backing. Dip your made stencils into the paint and stamp these all over the fabric. Stamp to create a grid pattern, or be creative and stamp your own designs onto the fabric.

GOOD TO KNOW: If you are using acrylic craft paint as an alternative to fabric paint, iron the painted fabric once you're done. This will bond the paint onto the fabric so that it won't wash off easily.

Now you're ready to sew the painted fabric into cushions covers.
