There are plenty of options for making a headboard and furniture for a bedroom. Builders stock a wide selection of PG Bison Melawood surfaces, and these can be cut and edged at your local Builders store.

We spend an awful lot of time in our bedrooms, and I spend a lot of time browsing through the many home decor and DIY sites that are on Instagram for bedroom ideas. I love these but they aren't always applicable to our situation in South Africa. You need to keep in mind that their walls are what we know as drywall or sheetrock and it is easy for them to add detailing to walls, mount on the walls, etc. Since our homes are generally brick and plaster, many of these ideas don't work for us. However, that doesn't mean that you can't use some of the ideas they present. Here are some simple and affordable ways to give a bedroom an update:

DIY Projects For a Bedroom

Do it yourself is the best way to save money on any projects. Plus, taking the DIY route allows you to think of ways to update a bedroom without having to try and source or have items custom made to fit. Back in 2012, I built a base for the bed with drawers underneath and wrapped the entire structure in faux suede. Even after so many years it still looks great, and I use the large, pull-out drawers all the time.

Being able to make stuff for your bedroom means that you can look at making the following custom items:

• Make a Headboard

Making a headboard has to be one of the easiest DIY projects if you keep it simple. Even upholstering a headboard is not a difficulty project and if you try a few basic upholstery projects beforehand - such as making an upholstered stool - it will be easy to pick up the tricks for making your own upholstered headboard or tufted headboard.

If you can DIY a headboard, you get to choose the materials you want to use, you can upholster it in the fabric of your choice and you can even match the fabric to your curtains or other decor items in the room. And by knowing that you did it yourself and how you made it, it is easier when the time comes for a change, and you want a new colour or pattern for the room.

Built-in storage above the bed provides a sleek look in a bedroom - one that provides plenty of storage that is out of sight.

• Storage Headboard

Another reason that you should consider DIY options for your bedroom is that you can build custom furniture to fit into the space. Builders offer a wide selection of materials and you can have these edged to use for making built-in storage for above the bed where you want a basic design storage headboard. You can decide how deep you want the cupboards, how they should fit into the space above the bed, or design a storage headboard that fits at the head of the bed, and even add bedside shelves that are incorporated into the storage headboard.

• Custom Headboard with Built-In Side Table

Use your DIY skills to design a custom headboard that you like and then incorporate built-in bedside tables for one or both sides of the bed. This way, there will be more floor space and again, you can decide on the size of the bedside tables to suit your own needs.

Draw up a basic sketch of the custom headboard you want to make and calculate the sizes that you need the boards to be cut for easy assembly.

Repurpose a plain bed base with a pull-out drawer at the end of the bed and then cover with faux suede or velvet.

• Storage Platform for the Bed

As mentioned above, having made my own storage base for my bed, I know for a fact that it is a great place to add extra storage without taking up valuable floor space and you can make the drawers to fit under both sides of the bed or pull-out from the bottom of the bed and make them as high as you need them for your storage needs.

You can make a storage base using pine, meranti or hardwood or you can make it using PG Bison Melawood, BisonLam or SupaLam depending on your budget. Adding pull-out storage drawers uses the same method as adding drawers to a cabinet.
