Makeover Magic for a Tired Bedroom

Tanya works her magic yet again, this time in the master bedroom. You may remember Tanya's kitchen makeover in her rented flat. Tanya tackled the main bedroom in her flat and transformed a tired room into a boutique style space.

Now it's time to take a look at how a boring and somewhat plain bedroom was given an inexpensive makeover.

The bedroom itself is typical for most older flats. The floor is parquet blocks, the walls are white and the room is small. Tanya wanted to create a luxurious space on an almost non-existent budget.

The inspiration for the makeover came from an old pair of curtains that had been lying in the cupboard for a long time. Perhaps somewhat old fashioned, Tanya used the design and colours in the fabric to reinvent the master bedroom.

On one side of the bed is a chest of drawers that needed TLC and a few coats of paint. This now serves as a bedside table and provides much needed storage in the room. The mirror above the chest of drawers is what Tanya refers to as a "plastic monstrosity that was on special offer", and which was given a coating of paper mache to add texture before being painted.

Almost everything that sits on the chest of drawers is made especially for the room using items bought on the cheap or found lying around.

The beautiful candlestick is one of those projects that makes use of items lying around or that Tanya collected on one of her 'shopping for bargain' outings ... two wooden rings, a curtain finial, a plaster flower pot and base, and a couple of blocks of offcuts!

Tanya made the headboard herself using small squares of wood wrapped in a thin batting and covered with a  fabric found in the bargain bin at a local fabric store. Just goes to show that a little shopping around can save you lots and provide you with ideas and inspiration for your next project.

A collection of framed prints fills the space above the headboard. Once again, bargain buys with images printed off a PC printer. So as now to clutter up the space, all the frames were painted white to match the surrounding trim.

In order to mount wall sconces on either side of the bed, and taking into consideration that this is a rented flat, Tanya used her Dremel Trio - or use a router - to route a channel at the back of PAR pine strips. The cabling for the wall lights was then placed in the channel before the pine was glued onto the wall using Pattex No More Nails.

In most instances a landlord or owner will not allow such improvements, but if you are clever and careful and are prepared to restore to original condition before you move out, there should be no problem with cosmetic decoration.

The master bedroom isn't large enough to accommodate much in the way of furniture, so Tanya had to improvise for extra storage space. On the other side of the bed she mounted a couple of shelves on decorative brackets - all painted white. The shelf couldn't be too wide, as the closet door opens out into the bedroom.

The drinks tray is another one of Tanya's magical creations and is simply a piece of wood with decorative handles and feet. Once again, something amazing from nothing!
