Snazzy headboard with fabric scraps

Here's a great way to use up fabric scraps, or fabric from the bargain bin, to make a snazzy headboard that is colourful and eye-catching.

Make a colourful headboard with a patchwork-effect using scraps of fabric or fabric from the bargain bin at your local fabric store, some thin foam, and a few tools and supplies available at your local Builders.

YOU WILL NEED:

Fabric scraps to make the size of headboard you require

Thin foam for the patchwork squares (approx. 2cm thick)

BisonBord - cut to the size of your headboard

3mm Masonite or Hardboard - cut for the individual squares

Sprayable adhesive

20mm screws

Roll of duct tape

Bosch Tacker or heavy-duty staple gun

Keyhole brackets and screws to mount onto the wall

HERE'S HOW:

1. Determine the size of the headboard required for your particular bed and then divide this into equal sections for the patchwork squares. Have the BisonBord and Masonite or Hardboard cut to fit. Mark the layout for the squares on the BisonBord, on what will be the back of the headboard.

2. Cut the foam to the size of the individual Masonite or Hardboard squares and secure to the board with sprayable adhesive.

3. Cut the scrap fabric to fit over the top and sides of the square, allowing just enough for the fabric to be stapled at the back of each square. Make sure that the staples do not protrude too much - tap with a hammer to flatten if necessary.

4. Line up the wrapped squares face down in your desired pattern. Use duct tape to attach the squares together and hold the pattern in place.

5. Using the drawn guide on the back of the headboard [1 above], use 20mm screws to attach the squares to the front of the headboard. Use 2 screws per square.

6. Attach keyhole brackets to the back of the BisonBord to hang the headboard on the wall.

GOOD TO KNOW: If you need to cover up the edges of the BisonBord, use iron-on or glue on edging strips in a colour that complements the finished colours of your headboard.
