Restore and refresh tile grout

If you have tiled floors or walls, particularly lighter coloured tiles, you will probably notice that the grout is looking grubby. While using a grout pen is a quick fix, there are other options for restoring tile grout for fresh looking tiles and rooms.

Use a Dremel MultiTool (any model) with the Grout Removal Attachment. The attachment makes it so easy to remove old grout from between tiles.

DIY TIP:
There are now grout sealers that you can apply to new grout to ensure that light coloured grout stays looking good for longer. Find these in the tiling section at your local Builders Warehouse
.

Grout Renu is a specially formulated chemical to clean old and dirty grout. Grout Renu is a blend of detergents, acids and thickeners that allow the product to cling to walls and floors thereby giving the chemical time to purge dirt from the grout. The original colour of the grout will be restored.

When using powdered grout, mix to a thick paste that can be easily applied. Be sure to mix well to avoid lumps. Once mixed, don't add any additional water as this will result in grout that crumbles later on.

When removing grout you only need to take off about 5mm before mixing up and re-applying new grout between tiles. However, where grout is starting to crumble, or where there is bad mould stains, it is best to remove as much grout as possible.

Use a paint scraper or palette knife to re-apply grout. Let this dry for a couple of hours and then wipe with a damp cloth to remove excess grout from tiles. A soft, dry cloth can be used to polish the tiles and remove any remaining grout dust or haze. Wait 24 hours and then apply Grout Sealer.
