Family Handyman magazine in Australia recently did a feature on how easy it is to change the colour of leather furniture using a brand new product. While this product is not locally available, you can buy it online for shipping to SA. Angelus Leather Preparer and Deglazer, Angelus Leather Paint and Angelus Acrylic Finisher allow you to completely transform all your leather furniture. Click on the links for more information and pricing on the products.

NOTE: This product will not repair cracked leather. If you paint over cracked leather the product won’t fix or hide the cracks, and if you paint a lighter colour they might become more visible.

Using this method to change the colour of leather is not a cheap option, but it is an option if you definitely can't live with your furniture.

Changing the colour of your leather furniture is now as easy as....

1. Prepare for painting by applying Angelus Leather Preparer and Deglazer. This is done with a soft cloth. Wipe a generous amount of product onto the surface of the leather and rub across gently into the leather. Once applied leave to dry.

GOOD TO KNOW: This step may remove some of the existing colour, but that won't be a problem since you are changing the colour.

2. The next step is to apply the special acrylic paint. There are 30 colourful shades in the range that you can choose from. Use a sponge or foam application to apply the paint. Even, thin coats are far better than thick coats - and will ensure better adhesion. Let each coat dry before applying the next coat.

Allow 2 hours drying time between each coat - and overnight before applying Finisher.

GOOD TO KNOW: It's a good idea to put a drop cloth where you will be working, as the paint is quite runny.

3. If you need to paint areas with detailing, such as sew edges, you can use a small artist's paintbrush. Alternatively, leave as is - it does add a nice weathered look.

There are a choice of sealants available, this leather bench has a matt sealer for a more natural look.

4. Apply a thin layer with a foam applicator, making sure to cover the entire surface area. Allow this to dry overnight.

GOOD TO KNOW: It's important to make sure the entire surface is painted with the Finisher.

How easy was that. Now you CAN change the colour of leather furniture!
