Clean and freshen a mattress

Use this handy guide to a clean, fresh mattress using non-toxic, household cleaners.

Did you know that the human body constantly sheds dry skin and releases oils and sweat as you sleep? That means that your mattress needs to be cleaned regularly, even more so if your pets sleep with you.

This non-toxic method will clean and refresh your mattress without using harsh chemicals, and without the need for water. All you need is Bicarbonate of Soda and a vacuum cleaner.

It used to be said that you need to flip a mattress every year, but nowadays many mattresses cannot be flipped; a pillow-top or memory foam mattress are two examples of mattresses that cannot be flipped, However, you can turn the mattress around (top to bottom) to relax the spring / foam foundation. But for a good clean and to refresh a mattress, try the following:

HERE'S HOW:

Remove all the bedding and sprinkle the mattress liberally with Bicarbonate of Soda. Have a soft brush on hand to gently work some of the powder into the surface of the mattress.

You need to let this sit on the mattress for as long as possible.

Remove the powder with a vacuum cleaner with brush attachment head to gently agitate the surface of the mattress.

Repeat this every 6 months or so to ensure a mattress is clean and fresh. If you start to notice bites on the skin you probably have an infestation of bed bugs. Immediate and regular treatment is the only way to rid your bed of these pests.
